Plating on Magnesium

E-Brite Ultra Cu-Mg copper plating process produces excellent adhesion and corrosion protection on AZ91 magnesium castings. Cyanide copper processes produce adhesion with average salt spray results 24 hours ASTM B-117 and parts can not be baked without blistering. E-Brite Ultra Cu-Mg process produces 96 hours on copper nickel chrome parts and as a base plate underneath electroless nickel achieved 400 hours salt spray!

EPi’s process for plating on magnesium does not utilize Electroless Nickel, saving the metal finisher money. EPi’s process consists of the following steps (Note: procedure is subject to change depending on the substrate and quality.)

1. E-Kleen 107 alkaline cleaner
2. Rinse
3. Acid Dip
4. Rinse
5. E-Pik 235 (etch)
6. Rinse
7. E-Pik 236 (etch)
8. Rinse
9. E-Pik 241 (acid activator)
10. Rinse
11. E-Prep 284 (Zincate)
12. Rinse
13. E-Brite Ultra Cu-Mg
14. Continue plating process Copper-Nickel-Chrome or Electroless Nickel for high corrosion resistance.
